- Robert F. Hassing 77 of Alpha passed away at the Sogge Good Samaritan Center in Windom on Friday May 20, 2016. A memorial Mass will be held on Wednesday May 25, 2016 at 10:30AM at the church of the Good Shepherd in Jackson with Father JamesSeitz officiating. Burial will take place at Ft. Snelling National Cemetery at a later date.
Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church.
Robert Frank Hassing the son of Lawrence and Mary (Breckunitch) Hassing was born on January 6, 1939 in Jackson, MN. As a child Robert attended Alpha Public Schools, later attending Jackson High School. After his schooling Robert worked several ag related odd jobs before enlisting in the United States Army in 1961. After his discharge in 1963 Robert began working for Cargill. While working at Cargill he met Mary Murphy and the couple was later married on March 11, 1966 at St. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Blue Earth. After marriage the couple made their home in Alpha and Robert started his career as a truck driver at Harry Hansen Trucking and later Jackson Feed. Robert retired from trucking in 1985. Robert and Mary continued to live in Alpha when he was admitted to Sanford Medical Center in Sioux Falls, before passing away at the Sogge Good Samaritan Center in Windom on Friday May 20, 2016 at the age of 77 years, four months and 14 days.
Robert was a lifelong member of the Church of the Good Shepherd in Jackson where he was an active member and frequent usher. Robert was a 26 year member of the Alpha Volunteer Fire Department where he served as acting chief for several years before his retirement and he was one of the founders of the Alpha Fire Department Annual Pork Chop Feed. Robert was also Past Commander of the Sherburn VFW and American Legions Posts serving on the funeral Honor Squad and attending every military funeral he was able to. Robert loved playing cards, making it to the Jackson American Legion most mornings for coffee and cards. Robert loved his morning paper and he really enjoyed touring the countryside, road hunting asparagus. He also enjoyed taking road trips up to North Dakota to visit his daughter and grandchildren.

Robert is preceded in death by his parents, his father and mother-in-law Victor and Margaret Murphy and a brother-in-law Ray Witt.
